Factors affecting the cost for orthodontic treatment

Share

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects malocclusion, treats bite issues, and gets you a beautiful smile. However, the procedures and appliances used for the treatment are different from regular dentistry, leading to confusion and queries regarding its cost. While it is easy to fall prey to misinformation and worry about the expenses, it would be ideal to make an informed decision after cross-checking with your orthodontist. The costs involved in teeth-straightening treatment via orthodontics depends on the following factors:

Treatment type

Orthodontists can suggest several treatment options based on the complexity of the malocclusion. You can choose from metal braces, ceramic braces, clear aligners, or lingual braces to straighten your teeth. The cost of the material used for each appliance and the technology required to manufacture them vary from one another. Specific customizations of the braces or aligners need smart technology for manufacturing. Therefore, the cost of the treatment depends on the method used and the level of customization required.

Treatment duration

On average, orthodontic treatment takes six months to a couple of years. The duration depends on the severity of the malocclusion. The more complex your condition is, the longer it would take to fix it. Based on the approximate duration, orthodontists decide on the course of the treatment. For example, if you are using clear aligners, a longer treatment time (based on the complexity of the issue) would mean more aligners to be worn, thereby increasing the cost of customization and manufacturing. This, in turn, will affect the cost of the overall treatment.

Plans and packages

Most orthodontists and orthodontic treatment providers offer all-inclusive packages without any hidden clause. This is shared with the patient at the beginning of the treatment. The packages include in-person doctor visits, evaluation of the problem, treatment plan, and follow-up. Some providers even offer the option of installment instead of a one-time bulk investment. Choose a treatment plan that best suits your budget and makes you smile from within.

Insurance coverage

Having your dental treatment covered by insurance makes a lot of difference in the final cost. If your dental insurance covers orthodontic treatment, then you can rest assured that the cost of having a beautiful smile won’t make a dent in your pocket. You can consult with a financial coordinator or check with your provider for more details on your insurance coverage before starting the treatment.  The outcome of orthodontic treatment more than makes up for the money spent. It is an investment for the overall well-being of your oral health. If you are still confused on whether you should go ahead with it because of the expenses involved, then reach out to your orthodontist at the earliest for more clarity.
